S P R I N G F E V E R : A Manual on Madness (2016) (Edition of 20) Dimensions: 21 x 29,7 x 1 cm 38 pages; printed transparencies; metal ring binder; blank A4 paper “SPRING FEVER”, is a reading device made up of printed transparent pages. My interest in non-linear forms of reading that activate the role of the reader came together in the form of a “manual on madness”. In weaving together written and found material from a personal collection of historical and daily events, I explored the complexity of definitions of madness and meaning and questioned the importance of inner speech set against the materiality of words and images. Printed on transparent pages, the action of reading is destabilised as multiple compositions of image and text can be overlaid by the reader. The blank page becomes a tool for reading. The manual includes the encoded conversations of Guy de Cointet, interviews by Eugene Ionesco and Vilém Flusser, the letters of Antonin Artaud, Aphasia and Kierkegaard’s notion of the inner voice, as well as the fake sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, to name a few. *Nominated for Gerrit Rietveld Thesis Prize 2016.
